Unemployment in Sikkim Higher than you think.

Sikkim is a small beautiful Himalayan state in India.  It has the smallest population in the country Sikkim, it is also India's third richest state by per capita income, first organic and open defecation free state.

Sikkim also has one of the highest literacy rate in the country. With all achievements Sikkim also tops the chart in few more things like the suicide rate which is almost triple the average of India and the Global average, it also has one of the highest drug abuse problems. It's employment rate is also India second highest after Tripura more than three times the national average.

The underlying problem creating  other problems seems to be unemployment. According to National crime records Bureau data more than 27% of those who committed suicide in Sikkim in 2014 were unemployed.

On the surface there seems to be a change with new initiatives from the Government but one can see in the ground themselves that even when a huge number of people were given employment with the One Family One Job Scheme the problem doesn't seem to have changed much. Further with the rising number of colleges and students graduating each year with their expectations about their future the reality of situation might seem too harsh each passing year.

Other states like Punjab and Manipur face similar problems where there is rising literacy among people but without jobs. A fifth of world suicide were related to unemployment and suicide increased nine-fold after the Global economic crisis in 2008. All these data are from few years back but things don’t seem to have changed much and the Govt. doesn't seem to be concerned with the actual problem which helps to create further serious problems like drug abuse and suicide.

It seems highly unlikely that these problems will be solved unless people see it as a real challenge affecting the youth of Sikkim and prioritise this over the communal and political talks where people at ground seems to be invested in.
